While the title is an instant reminder of Elton John and Kiki Dee’s 1976 earworm with the same name, Backstreet’s “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” takes a synthy, electro-pop turn courtesy producers Jamie Hartman and Stuart Crichton. The track seems new and old at the same time, nostalgia doing wonders to reintroduce  the group to older fans while the dose of electronica appeals to newbies.
After several weeks of teasing new music, the American pop group ended their five-year hiatus today with the release of the music video for “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” The track is the Backstreet Boys’ first single together since 2016’s collaboration with country duo Florida Georgia Line on “God, Your Mama, and Me” and their first big independent release since their 2013 LP In a World Like This.
